Take This Math and Shove It !

During the school year I work as a teacher’s assistant at a local elementary school. But come June, school is out for the summer and so is my job. In the past I have found jobs working at preschools, but the last three summers I have not been able to find a job.  All that changed this past Sunday, when I got a call from a girlfriend of mine. She had been offered a job just for this week in data  entry . It is 40 hours of work with good pay. She works so she couldn’t do it and she thought of me, knowing that I wasn’t working this summer.

So bright and early Monday morning I reported for work. There were several of us waiting in the reception area to begin the job. There are  seven people in the group I’m working with, mixed ages and all very nice. However, the people who are supervising are younger than me and it’s a little disconcerting to say the least. Next month I will be 47 and I’m working for people in their twenties and maybe early thirties. Needless to say, I’m feeling a little bit old at the moment.

Basically, the job entails editing and saving information from math textbooks. I was assigned the 8th grade math book to work with. Let me say right here and now, that I don’t remember math being like this when I was in 8th grade. Equations, geometry, graphing and so on are just a few of the things covered. It’s a good thing they didn’t assign me any higher math because in high school, the only math I took was algebra in 9th grade. We don’t have to actually do the math, just copy, paste, and input the info. We work on laptops with a second , bigger monitor plugged in, so that we can bring up the information in a larger window,in order  to see  it easier.

I have no problem going between two monitors, or using multiple screens at all  but I’m not used to sitting all day in front of a computer staring at the screen.  Now having said that, here I am sitting in front of MY laptop after working in front of one all day. But this is different.  When I’m using my laptop, aside from writing this blog, I’m using it for fun( and yes, to me, writing my blog IS fun).

By the time I left work on Monday my I was tired and my shoulders were sore. Nothing I couldn’t handle though. Yesterday, however was a different story. By the time the end of the day rolled around yesterday, I was physically and mentally exhausted. I did get up several times to get coffee, use the restroom and go to lunch. By five o’clock, my eyes were spinning in my head and I thought my brain would explode form all the math I had to look at. And I got to do it all again today, oh how fun.

Today is Wednesday which means only two more days to go. It’s a good thing I have a chiropractor that I’ve been to before. I may need him!   Now I just have to make it through the next two days and I’ll never have to look Math in the face ever again.  I have just one question.

Is it Friday yet?!
