My day started just like any day. I got to the elementary school where I work as a teacher’s aide, signed in and chatted with one of my girlfriends. We checked our email in the media center, then went to the cafeteria to set up for breakfast. The kids, came in, got their breakfasts and came and sat at the tables. At 7:45 I went for my 15 minute morning break. I gathered up my purse along with my sweet tea and breakfast burrito from McDonald’s and went to the staff lounge. At first all seemed okay when I walked into the lounge. I put my burrito in the microwave to reheat, and walked to the table to put down my purse and tea. After going back to the microwave to retrieve my burrito , I sat down at the table, and that’s when I saw it….the biggest palmetto bug I have ever seen in my life was crawling along the wall opposite the table. Now, I live in South Florida where palmetto bugs are pretty common, and I’ve seen plenty of them( I call them roachzillas), but this one was the granddaddy of them all. I might be exaggerating a bit to say you could put a saddle on this thing, but I wouldn’t be exaggerating by much. Once I spotted that sucker, I took all my stuff and moved to the other side of the room, sitting in a chair by one of the two doors in case I needed to make a quick exit. I watched the palmetto bug crawl along the wall, towards a blackboard that was hung over one of the sofas til it looked like it disappeared. I watched for a couple of minutes, and when it looked like the bug was gone, I started eating my burrito. But it wasn’t long before my creepy, crawly friend reappeared, and starting crawling across the blackboard in my direction. Checking the clock, I saw that I still had five minutes to go until my break was over. I had to choose between ending my break a few minutes early or staying in the staff lounge with the King of Roachzillas. I chose to end my break early. That room wasn’t big enough for the both of us, and if the palmetto bug was any bigger, it wouldn’t be big enough for him!
