Twinkiepocalypse Now: The End Of The World As We Know It

An American icon has died and our nation is in mourning. Hostess, maker of such beloved snacks as Twinkies, Hostess Cupcakes, and Ding Dongs, is going out of business due to financial issues compounded by a baker’s strike. While many people have been preparing for the Zombie Apocalypse on December 21st, no one imagined that something far worse was coming. It’s “Twinkiepocalypse Now.”

I, along with many others, grew up with Hostess, and Twinkies were my favorite as a child. I remember going to the corner store, Tee Gee’s,whenever I need a Twinkie fix. And a Hostess Cupcake fix. And a Fruit Pie fix.  Although I became a Drake’s Cakes girl as I got older, I always looked back fondly on my Hostess days. Imagine my shock, and dismay when I found out that Drake’s had been bought by Hostess several years ago. Not only are Twinkies going the way of the dinosaur, but since Drake’s is now owned by Hostess, this means no more, Devil Dogs, Funny Bones, and worst of all, no more Ring Dings ! Oh the horror of it all!

Last week while grocery shopping with my best friend, we saw that Ring Dings were on sale 2 for $6.00. Immediately two boxes were plucked off the shelf and put in the cart. We now each have a box in our respective refrigerators. We figured  better get ’em while we can, because who knows how much longer we have until they too become extinct.

It’s been all over the news, the Internet, and Facebook. The Twinkiepocalypse is here, and there’s nothing any of us can do about it. Frankly, I’d rather take my chances with the zombies!

  1. I personally will miss the ho ho's! What will I take for a peanut free sweet treat when I go on field trips?!?!? The chocolate has such a calming effect if the day gets tough….and the sugar high keeps me going! I will miss them!
