On October 8th,2011, Joplin High School had their homecoming dance. After the EF5 tornado that struck Joplin Missouri on May 22nd, 2011, this is nothing short of a miracle. With the school building destroyed, the future of Joplin High and it’s students was uncertain. But on August 17,2011, school began as usual for the students, and less than three months later, Homecoming. My friend’s daughter,Shaney, who goes to Joplin High, went to Homecoming, and posted pictures on Facebook. To see the teenagers doing something ordinary despite an extraordinary situation, is a testament to the spirit of the people of Joplin. As a special surprise , American Idol’s David Cook( season 7 winner) performed at the Homecoming dance. With all these kids and their families have been through, it was an awesome surprise, and one that was well deserved.

A mere 5 months after a deadly tornado destroyed their town, and took countless lives, the people of Joplin have risen to the challenge put before them. They go to school and work with their heads held high. They carry on with an indomitable spirit, showing the rest of us that despite everything, Joplin is bouncing back and will be better than ever. We could learn a thing or two from them. Go Joplin!!
