Our nation has a rich history, some of which is downright horrible. But it is those horrible parts people are trying to downplay. In fact, here in Florida they want to rewrite the history of slavery by saying that slaves learned useful skills. They are actually planning to use that in the curriculum in middle school and higher.
Not only that, but now podcaster Joe Rogan is saying that Jews survived the Holocaust by being useful. how were the deaths of 6 million Jews useful to those who survived? How was the torture of, and experimentation on Jews useful? They survived by sheer will and determination. To say otherwise is unconscionable.
I have had the honor and privilege to meet and get to know several Holocaust survivors. I have seen the numbers tattooed on their arms and have listened to their stories of the horrors they endured. But they not only survived, they thrived. To deny what they went through is not only disrespectful to those who survived, to those who didn’t, and to their families, it is a slap in the face.
Slavery is another bleak time in America’s history. Slaves were bought and sold, beaten, raped, and more. What kind of useful skills did they learn from that? None come to mind. Not a single one. To deny the truth about Slavery is morally and ethically reprehensible. It happened and it was horrible.
If we don’t teach kids the truth about our history today, they will grow up to become tomorrow’s racists, bigots, and worse. by denying the truth, those who want to change history could wind up grooming the next Hitler. I shudder to think of the possibility.
Winston Churchill once said, “Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Unfortunately there are too many people who have failed to learn from history. We must stop them before they repeat it.
